Footloose, kick off your Sunday shoes
I think the main thing about Honda Motor's new Robot ASIMO is how well he walks. Two legs, bipedal, just like a human being. Not only can he walk, he can run, brace himself if he falls, get up, kick things, balance on teeter-totters, climb stairs and so on.

ASIMO has actually been around now in one version or another for about four years. But his most recent versions are pretty remarkable. Good enough, anyway, that South Park parodied him in an episode called AWESOM-O.

Bipedal mobility (or something better if you can think of it) is necessary if robots are ever to really become a part of our everyday lives, in our homes and on our streets, accompanying their human siblings in natural and urban environments.

There are some excellent videos demonstrating ASIMO here: http://world.honda.com/ASIMO/ And there's more information here: http://asimo.honda.com/

Comments:
(again monopolizing your comment space) What I'm wondering is if the Asimo robot is actually cost-friendly, as in if it costs €1.5million to build one they're not exactly going to be everywhere anytime soon.
And another thing (again off subject) what's a good objective news agency in Japan that also has their news in English. I'm trying to broaden my world perspective.
you rock!

You're right. ASIMO is too expensive right now for normal consumer use. I don't know this first hand, but I've read it rents (to places like Disneyland) for about US $160,000 per year. So I think its purpose right now is to iron out some of the technical challenges of domestic robotics (like mobility). Hopefully, less expensive versions will come along later.

As far as news sources about Japan, you could try:

The Japan Times

Mainichi Daily News

Daily Yomiuri

Asahi Shimbun

you are genuinely an invaluable resource, I salute you.
